In Chinese history, the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty is a turbulent period, the intensification of ethnic conflicts, ideological and cultural collision, this period of painting genres become history of painting on a peaks contending situation. Gong Xian is a Ming Dynasty painter, he in the paintings of the Ming and Qing Dynasties occupies a very important position, ranking first in the "Jinling eight". Good at with ink and strokes both steady and calm, bald and stylus used interchangeably, bald mellow, vigorous, picture give a person with empty lonely mood.The landscape painting style of Gong Xian is roughly divided into three periods, namely,succinct and quiet "Bai Gong" period, Cang Xiu Xujing and "Gong" period, chaos and serene "black Gong" period. The three period includes a "static", although the style is different however, the picture is a empty, his style is formed by many factors. Under the influence of these factors, his landscape painting has formed unique style characteristics, the picture shows a kind of emptiness.
