Research On Naming Motivation In Basic Emotions Words Of Shuowenjiezi

The research of word denomination is both the important field of traditional exegesis and modern Chinese lexicology. As the abstraction and complication of psychological activities,the naming mechanism of which seems more elusive than the general words.Being accompany with us all the times, emotion is the most abstract complex and senior experience which includes abounding internal feelings and external forms. Therefore, the research of emotions’ denomination is indispensable.Selecting joy,anger,sadness and fear vocabulary from Shuowenjiezi,this article tries to explore the naming motivation of basic emotions combined with the ancient scholium.Then,this paper arranges the etymological motivation under categories on the basis of their origin and discusses the naming mechanism of emotions. This article is divided into five parts:Part one: The introduction gives a sketch of aim,methodology,theory basis,significance of the thesis,and the previous studies of motivation and emotions.Part two: Determine the research object. The basic emotions contains joy,anger,sadness and fear. We select 61 basic emotion words from Shuowenjiezi with the help of lexical meaning and psychological definition.After that,we verify the original meaning of these words.Part three: Explore the naming motivation of basic emotions in Shuowenjiezi. Combing with ancient exegesis,this paper links other paronyms by using the method of“sound,semantic combing with shape”,then it sort out the thread of the semantic development.Next, we extract the nucleus element of meaning and reveal the naming motivation of basic emotions.Part four: Cognitive analysis and naming patterns of basic emotions. Primarily this paper narrate the process of emotion and analyze the naming mechanism with the Cognitive Model Theory; Posteriorly it arranges the etymological motivation under categories on the basis of their origin. Through data analysis, it can be found that: Firstly the etymological motivation of basic motivation mainly comes from the domains of body,space-time and event,that the body domain is the most important part;Secondly there are obviousdifferences among the four kinds of basic emotions; Thirdly we can find distinct cultural features and depth clearly from the basic emtions’ denomination.Part five: Conclusion. Briefly summarize the main points of this thesis. In addition, this part also suggests the limitation of the present study and puts forward suggestions for further study.
