In the field of teaching Chinese as a second language, the acquisition and practical application of modal particle “le”(At present, the academic circles generally referred to it as “le2”) has been a difficult part for Chinese learners. Although the research achievements of “le2” is very rich, negative transfer from mother tongue still has obvious effect during the acquisition of "le2" because that it has no fixed form of expression in English. Therefore, this paper made every effort to find “le2”’s rules in the process of Chinese and English transformation through the comparison of these two languages, and used the achievements of analysis of the errors to help Chinese learners whose mother tongue is English to effectively use the positive transfer and consciously overcome the negative transfer in order to correctly understand “le2”’s semantics, tone and usage, as far as possible to reduce and avoid the error.This paper had innovation in Chinese-English contrastive analysis, mainly reflected in the following two points. First, the corpus are chosen from English-original novels and Chinese translation version. Compared with the existing results which selected Chinese-English translation corpus, this paper effectively avoided the loss of grammatical meaning and tone function of “le2”. Second, the analysis of the corpus were classified based on the grammatical meaning in order to make analysis more targeted. Also the research were analyzed with perspective of discourse instead of sentence as the unit, combined with the context to analyze the reflection of “le2” in English. This paper aims to find the characteristics of le2’s expression in English by Chinese-English contrastive analysis and the error characteristics and causes by errors analysis, then give teaching suggestions and instructional design of “le2”. This paper is divided into five chapters:The first chapter is the introduction, this chapter mainly introduces the topic origin, significance of topics、literature review about “le2”、and brief introduction to the source of the corpus of the paper and classification. This chapter also introduce sresearch methods and defines the scope of research in this paper.The second chapter is the Chinese-English contrastive analysis of modal particle "le". This chapter found out the characteristics of le2’s expression in English by analyzing through the 1697 groups of English and Chinese corpus. The analysis had several aspects including tense, time, the characteristics of communicative bilateral relations, occasion, etc.The third chapter is the errors analysis of modal particle “le”. This chapter collected statistics of le2’s errors from writing corpus of Chinese learners whose mother tongue is English, analyzed the characteristics of errors and then summarized the causes.The fourth chapter is the teaching strategy of modal particle “le”. This chapter putted forward the corresponding strategies of teaching materials, teaching method,after-class exercise, multimedia teaching based on the above analysis according to the results of the contrastive analysis and error analysis.The fifth chapter is the summary of this paper’s main points and shortcomings.
