The Chinese modal particle ‘LA’ is considered as the combination of the Chinesemodal particle ‘LE’ and ‘A’. This paper aims at analyzing and concluding thesimilarities and differences between the Chinese modal particle ‘LA’ and Chinesemodal particles ‘LE’ and ‘A’, investigating to know the condition of overseasstudents’ using the Chinese modal particle ‘LA’, analyzing and summarizing theirusing errors and its reasons and at last pointedly putting forward some concretesuggestions to the teaching of ‘LA’ in the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language,hoping that this paper can be helpful and useful to both the teaching and learning ofthe Chinese modal particle ‘LA’.Through Minimum Differences Antitheses and Maximum Generalities Induction,this paper reached at the following conclusions: except that it expresses BoundedVariation sometimes, Informing and Requesting for Reaction Weak-mindedlysometimes and both of them sometimes, the basic modal function of the Chinesemodal particle ‘LA’ is Mood Activating and it is suitable for relaxing and casualoccasions and comparatively close communication goals. By investigating withcorpuses and questionnaires, we got to know that the usage rate of the Chinesemodal particle ‘LA’ by overseas students is on the low side, that their understandingof the basic function and usages and restricted conditions of applying the word isnot enough, that most of them adopt avoiding tactics for this word and that even ifthey sometimes use it errors are not a few. This paper analyzed the errors theymade while using the Chinese modal particle ‘LA’ and its reasons and at last putforward some concrete suggestions, like adding more example sentences andadopting the teaching way of inspiring and inducing, to textbook compilation andclassroom teaching and other aspects, expecting that they can be helpful to theteaching of the word or even all Chinese modal particles in the teaching of Chineseas a foreign language.
