Language and culture closely relate to each other. To some extent, translation is equal to cultural communication. The research on C-E translation of cultural essays can not only enrich the techniques of cultural translation but also help to spread Chinese culture to the world. Because China is accelerating its pace to open up, further studies of C-E translation of cultural essays are significant and necessary. This work is a project report on the translation of the essay “Transparency and Vagueness” which is an argumentation about drama written by Mr. Wang Zhaowen, and which was published on the magazine Drama in 1962. The full name of the essay is “Transparency and Vagueness——On the Ways of Expressing Ideas of Drama”, so it centers on the two ways of expressing ideas of drama—— "vagueness" and "transparency". The whole report includes five chapters, which mainly discuss the ways of the translation of cultural elements and the understanding and reflection of the work. The first chapter is an introduction to this project, including its background and the translation material. The second chapter describes the process of preparation before translation and focuses on collecting background information, cultural analysis and task allocation. The third chapter is a full description of the translation process. The fourth chapter is the key part of this report——case analysis. Several examples are analyzed. The author concludes that when one copes with cultural translation foreignization is a quite suitable way. Translators should use literal translation as much as possible. Chapter 5 is the conclusion of this report. This report applies both the theory of cultural translation school and Nada’s theory of Equivalence to analyze the translation of cultural elements. It advocates that translation should let readers expose to the exotic culture on the premise of being faithful to the original texts.
