On Vagueness Of Translation And Vague Expression In Translation

The theory of vagueness has revealed a fact that there is no accurate boundary between the practical objects which has aroused great interest because vagueness reflects the nature of the objective world and human thoughts. It has exerted great influence on the development of different disciplines including linguistics.Vagueness exists in human language, and vagueness is one of the innate attributes of human thinking and natural language. Studies on linguistic vagueness have profoundly revealed the intrinsic quality of language from the cognitive perspective and deepened people's cognition about the essence of language.For decades, one of the striking characteristics of western studies on translation theory has been to draw support from study in other fields, especially linguistics. The study on vague linguistics shows that there's close connection between vague theory and translation. Thus the combination of the two comes very naturally. The application of vague theory and vague linguistics in translation study can not only enrich translation theory, but also better guide translation practice.This thesis, based on the previous research, attempts to analyze vagueness of translation and vague expression in translation. This thesis is divided into five parts. In the first chapter, the author makes a brief introduction of the significance, the organization as well as the content of the paper. Chapter two gives a general account of previous studies on vagueness and linguistic vagueness. Based on research on definition, domestic and foreign developments of translation, chapter three discusses the profound influence on translation theories exerted by deconstruction and puts emphasis on a survey of vagueness in definition, nature, criteria, process, and style of translation. Chapter four, from the perspectives of need of accuracy, intercultural communication, pragmatics and aesthetics, illustrates the necessity of vague expression in translation and introduces its application in literary translation. The last chapter, serving as a conclusive part of the thesis as a whole, points out that translation is an activity with vagueness in nature and advocates vague expression in translation is reasonable and necessary which enables a translator to make the best use of vagueness in target language so as to improve translation and appreciation and thereby produce translation works with higher quality.
