This translation report is based on How to Disappear: Notes on Invisibility in a Time of Transparency, written by Akiko Busch,a professor at Bennington College in America,Vermont. She served as a magazine editor at Cosmopolitan,a global women's magazine for twenty years. Her body of knowledge contains design, culture and nature writing. In this book, combining her personal experiences,Akiko Busch aims to explore how we can no longer be looked at—how to disappear from the perspective of nature, art, technology, etc. In this vulgar era of over exposure,as a book close to the present, this book lets us see the other side of exposure—the benefits of invisibility. The object of the translation report is chapter seven “The Anonymity Proposal”,chapter eight “Rereading Mrs.Dalloway” and chapter nine “The Vanishing Self”.The book belongs to Social science work,in which the author studies the present social phenomenon and expresses her views, emotion and attitude,to expand the horizons of readers, remove distractions and trigger thinking. Therefore, the book is not only the express of experiences and thought of the author, but an appeal of action to readers.According to Peter Newmark's Text Typology, this book combines informative function, expressive function and appellative function.Meanwhile, parallelism, metaphor and other rhetoric are abounding, and various terminologies as well as long and difficult sentences can be found everywhere,so how to faithfully convey the text to make it accepted by the TL readers is the difficult point. So the writer takes Peter Newmark's Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation theory as the guidance,to solve the difficult problems including terminologies, difficult sentences and rhetoric, hoping for convey the author's intention well and truly under the correct understanding of the original.Through this translation practice, the writer deeply understands the importance of translation theory to practice. In addition, the writer found out that Social sciences text often combines the characteristics of informative text and expressive text,so when translating, translators should fully convey the original information and theintention of the authors,to achieve functional equivalence, and adapt to the TL readers' needs,to achieve communicative functions. This translation practice inspires the writer to seize the day,and to strive to become a professional.
