Context, indispensable to science fiction translation, exerts influence on the literariness of SF translation in a variety of ways. Literariness is the primary criterion of science fiction translation. It has to be fulfilled in the translation of narrations, descriptions and dialogues, which are complementary to the characterization and contextual construction in science fiction and its translation. Taking her own English-Chinese translation of three SF short stories by Mike Resnick as an example, the Author of this thesis conducted a case study in the light of linguistic context, situational context, and cultural context to find out how three types of contexts exert their influence on the realization of literariness in SF translation. From the case studies, the Author-Translator reached the following conclusions:different types of contexts produce different influence on the translation of narrations, descriptions and dialogues (employed as fiction-writing methods). Taking the SL context into full consideration can help the translator connect the source text with the plots closely, so that s/he will gain a better understanding of the ST, achieving the literariness of TT ultimately. The research findings based on the Author’s first translation of the said SF stories will provide some enlightening ideas concerning SF translation.
