With the development of globalization and the spread of Chinese culture,Chinese literary works have been translated into various versions.Since 2000,most of Mo Yan’s novels have been translated,but the translation of short stories is less.However,Mo Yan’s short stories in different periods have different writing styles,and reflect creation development of Mo Yan’s short stories and changes of creation styles.The translation text is nine short stories in two collections of short stories named A Date with the Master and the White Dog and the Swings written by Mo Yan.The writer’s translation purpose is to help foreign readers know fully characteristics of Mo Yan’s literary works and changes of Mo Yan’s writing styles and to spread Chinese culture to foreign readers,so the writer mainly adopts foreignization strategy.At the same time,the writer adopts domestication strategy to ensure the readability and acceptability.This report shows translation strategies the writer adopts in a quantitative approach and the report gives a detailed explanation through typical examples.Foreignization strategy the writer adopts accounts for two-thirds of the translation strategy in idiom translation,including literal translation and literal translation with annotations.Domestication strategy accounts for one-third of the translation strategy in idiom translation,including liberal translation,idiomatic translation and omission.The writer presents the application of foreignization and domestication into translation of set phrases,proverbs and common sayings.Foreignization is of great significance to the transmission of primitive culture,while domestication can make translation more fluent and easier for readers to understand.The writer hopes that this report will help readers have a deep understanding of characteristics of idioms in Mo Yan’s short stories and Mo Yan’s early writing styles,and contributes to the translation practice in the future.
