| As a part of our traditional music culture, Teochew music is still active in folk music event. It is a cultural need of the social group in our country. By having interview, field trips,participating study activities of Teochew music and join practical performance with theoretical methods in the research, will complete the study from a sociological point of view. Also, the author will explore its social function by understanding its influence from contemporary social environment.The introduction of this paper described the environment of Teochew music and a overview of this music. Although the overview of Teochew music is not by the author of this paper, since the understanding of the relationship among social group, social event and social function can not be ignored, the overview of this music is still a mandatory in this paper.The main part of this paper is to analyze the social function and living style of Teochew music in Teochew-Shantou region and Hong Kong.From geographical aspect and object selection aspect, the author explained why Teochew-Shantou region and Hong Kong are the two main area that holding this music and why string-poetry music and traditional percussion music are the key feature that stand for this genre in Teochew music’s living style. Meanwhile, the author compares the difference of Teochew music between Teochew-Shantou area and Hong Kong area, in order to highlight the impact of different social environment to the music culture.Inside its living style, the author will focus on Teochew music community management units as well as the content in management, source of income of Teochew music artists, Teochew music in social events, modern young people’s learning attitude and views to Teochew string-poetry music, and narrate in sociological point of view.Another element of the main part in this paper is the social function of Teochew music in contemporary society. The author concludes and demostrate five different aspects of Teochew music according to available material and field trip feedback. Based on this information, the author also made comparisons between Teochew-Shantou region and Hong Kong in its social functions.Then, in the sixth chapter of the article, Thought-provoking: questions in the continuation of Teochew music culture, the author analyzes the difficulties faced.In the conclusion part of the article, the author puts forward some positive proposals existence the impact reaction of contemporary society to Teochew music and the positive role it played in protecting traditional Chinese music from the music sociological point of view through the article.
