A Translation Report Of Hamam Balkania： A Novel And Other Stories (Chapter ⅩⅩⅣ,ⅩⅩⅤ And ⅩⅩⅨ)

This is a translation report on Hamam Balkania:A Novel and Other Stories, a historical fiction by a modern Serbian author Vladislav Bajac which was translated from the original serbian into English by Randall A. Major, of which Chapter Twenty-four, Chapter Twenty-five and Chapter Twenty-nine are the source text. The text has two parallel stories, one is about the author’s philosophical thought on Serbia and the Ottoman Empire, as well as the ponder on ways of cleansing one’s spirit. And the other goes after the life of the leading character Bajica and his friendship with a Serbian engineer.Problems of this project mainly lie in the exact understanding of the original text, the choice of optimum words, and the translating of long sentences. Thus Functional Equivalence Theory is chosen as the theoretic guidance throughout translating, and some related translation skills such as amplification, embedding and division are used in order to reproduce the source language message in a closest natural equivalent manner.The project aims to cast the Chinese a charm of Serbian literature through high-quality translation, thus promoting cultural exchange as well as mutual understanding of the two people. And the translation practice bring home to the translator the significance of skillful translation strategies, solid bilingual foundation and rich knowledge reserves. Meanwhile care and patience are indispensable.
