A Translation Project Report On Hamam Balkania:a Novel And Other Stories (Excerpts)

Literary translation is an eternally renewed research field. To do well in literary translation project is to build a bridge between different nations. In this way, different countries can spread their own cultures and at the same time learn from different cultures to enrich their own cultures.This is a project report on the translation of the excerpts (P225-253 & P344-350) from Vladislav Bajac’s Hamam Balkania:A Novel and Other Stories, a comprehensive book of stories about Serbian religion, philosophy, history and other aspects. These stories are narrated in a parallel mode:on the one hand, they look back into history; on the other hand, they look forward to future. The book is translated into English by American scholar Randall A Major, and is published by Gepoetika Publishing, Belgrade. This report is based on page 225 to page 253 and page 344 to page 350 of the English-edition version and introduces stories about Serbian music, architecture, war and culture.From the perspective of Skopos Theory, this report explores the translation of official title and war, the reference of pronoun, the representation of writing style and other difficult problems. To solve these problems, the author uses amplification, reconstruction, conversion of part of speech and other translation skills.This report consists of four chapters:Chapter One is translation project background, including its source, significance and analysis. Chapter Two is the description of it, including preparations, the translation process and post-process work. Chapter Three is the analysis of the translation cases. It lists the major difficulties and problems in it, and introduces Skopos Theory which emphasizes that the most important element which decides translation process is the purpose of this activity. Chapter Three also discusses solutions through such translation skills as amplification, reconstruction and conversion of part of speech under the guidance of German Skopos Theory. Chapter Four summarizes the project, including illumination, lessons and unsolved problems. The writer wishes this translation report would benefit future translation activities.
