A Report On Translating Developing Countries: Four Cases

The E-C translation of economic documents can facilitate the introduction of advanced economic theories, provide guidance for economic development and promote international exchange and communication. Building National and Regional Innovation Systems is an economic work published in 2010. Along with the other two translators, the author finished a part of the translation task of this book. The report is based on the translation practice.The guiding principle of the report is Newmark’s theory of semantic translation and communicative translation, which provides guiding principles and a theoretical basis for the author’s practical translation strategies. Besides Introduction and Conclusion, the report falls into three chapters. The first Chapter introduces the original author, the content of the source text, target readers and the requirements of the client. Chapter two describes the translation process. Under the guidance of semantic and communicative translation theory,the author strives for the accuracy and fluency of the translation. She has made adequate preparation before the translation process and carefully proofread the target text after the process. Chapter three is case analysis. The author reflects and summarizes her translation strategies from lexical level, syntactical level and textual level. On lexical level, the author adopts the strategy of literal translation for economic terms and paraphrases figurative expressions in the source text. On syntactical level, the author employs sequential translation to deal with the contents related to economic theories, and division and reverse order translation are applied to handle long and complicated sentences. On textual level,the author applies translation strategies comprehensively to reproduce the sentimental sense and logic of the source text. The translation strategies and inadequacies in the translation process are summarized in the Conclusion.
