With the deepening of external exchanges in recent years, more and more international students attend China’s universities. Hence, the English translation of guidebook aimed at promoting the standardized management of international students enjoys increasing importance.Guide for International Students(Guide) gives a relatively comprehensive introduction to the rules and regulations concerning the study, life, work and other aspects of international students in China. Since the target readers of the Guide are mainly international students, the translation of the Guide should consider the needs of target readers as much as possible. Chesterman’s translation norm theory studies the role of norms in the translation process from the perspective of the target language. The theory not only focuses on the text itself but also involves all the factors in the translation process, such as the clients, text types and target readers, etc. It provides a new perspective for the translation study. Thus, it is meaningful to study the translation of Guide by resorting to Chesterman’s translation norm theory. This paper is on a translation report. The report’s object is the Guide that the author translated for a university in 2014. By analyzing the function, type and linguistic features of the source text, the author explores the translation methods of informative legal texts under the guidance of Chesterman’s translation norm theory. This report consists of five parts. Chapter One introduces the project background, translation process and significance of the project; Chapter Two analyzes the function, type and linguistic features of the source text; Chapter Three introduces the theoretical foundation of this report and presents Chesterman’s translation norm theory as well as its guiding role in the translation practice; Chapter Four is the core of this report. The author conducts case analysis guided by Chesterman’s translation norm theory, and carries out analyses from three different aspects, namely lexical level, syntactic level and stylistic level; Chapter Five presents the summary of the translation practice, limitations and unsolved problems.
