Strategies For Translating The Yearbook Of The United Nations Under The Guidance Of Chesterman’s Translation Norm Theory

This thesis is a translation project report based on the UN Yearbook Express 2010(Vol64). The UN Yearbook Express stands as the authoritative reference work on the annual activities and concerns of the United Nations and it provides a comprehensive coverage of political and security matters, human rights issues, economic and social questions, legal issues, and institutional, administrative and budgetary matters. With the rapid development of the globalization, the United Nations has shown greater concern of realizing the even application of its six official languages among the Organization, which speeds up the project of translating the Yearbook Express of English version into the other five official languages.According to the Chesterman’s Translation Norm Theory, this thesis summarizes the difficulties encountered in the translation process and analyzes the strategies adopted to deal with the problems from syntactic, semantic and pragmatic aspects.The whole report consists of four parts: the first part introduces the translation task,including the task background, the objectives and process of the task; the second part is the theoretical framework, which briefly introduces Chesterman’s Translation Norm Theory and the characteristics of the UN Yearbook, as well as describes the application of the theory in the translation process; the third part is the case study, presenting the difficulties encountered in the translation process and introducing solutions of the problems from syntactic, semantic and pragmatic aspects; the fourth part is the conclusion which includes the insights and experience gained from this task, and also the meaning and shortcomings of this report.
