In Porfessor Qian Renping’s Essay Dawn after Gloaming, Ligeti’s three volumes of Etudes for Piano were regarded as the pinnacle work which saved the 20-Century piano music. During his composing, he never stopped to create new method and thought on composing, which can be proved in his his second volume of Etudes. The intention of his Etudes for Piano has return to music composing of melody and rhythm, especially the complex textures, the rhythm and accent, crazy speed, and micropolyphony (Ligeti has spent a long time to explore), which apparently indicates the difficulty and high technique of these Etudes.This dissertation, chose the third volume (Book III) of Etudes for Piano as the main abject of study, consists of seven chapters, emphasis on harmony analysis and rhythm characteristic analyzing. When it comes to harmonic analysis, the melody material and the pitch construction are the most important two parts which need a deep investigation. Besides, the equal rhythm movement and tone accents stagger are the two important parts in the rhythmic characteristic analysis. The author will deconstruction Ligeti’s unique characteristic of rhythm structure and equal rhythm moving through the detailed analysis of the score cases so that give a further insight into and grasp the style, connotation and rhythm characteristic of Ligeti’s late piano works.
