A Report On C-E Translation Of "Semi-Annual Report Of Shandong Confucius And Mencius Cultural Heritage Conservation And Development Project"

This report is completed upon the author’s translation from Chinese to English of Semi-Annual Report of Shandong Confucius and Mencius Cultural Heritage Conservation and Development Project.The project of Confucius and Mencius Culture Heritage Conservation with loans from the World Bank is one of the important projects in China using loans from the World Bank. As the project had acquired the loan permission from the World Bank, the implementation units needed to jointly prepare reports on the project scheduling to the Bank regularly. Entrusted by Shandong Provincial Administration of Cultural Heritage, the author and other two students took the responsibility of translating the project report into English. The English report is not only important for communication between the implementation units and the Bank, but also a valuable experience for the author in translating similar types of documents. Thus, this task is chosen as the material of this translation report.When reviewing this translation task, the author surprisingly found out that a systematic translating pattern (text type-translating principles-translating techniques) might be established for similar informative-texts translating in accordance with Reiss’s theory of Text Typology. If so, this pattern can definitely provide a reference for translators in dealing with such type of documents. And this is exactly the purpose and significance of writing the translation report.This report consists of five chapters. Chapter One mainly introduces the project information and describes the translation task; Chapter Two discusses the difficulties at lexical and syntactic level, and it gives a brief introduction to Text Typology of Reiss and three principles based on the theory in the task translation; Chapter Three explains the techniques used for solving difficulties at different levels with the guidance of the "Three Principles" and also includes some case studies; Chapter Four presents the difficulties beyond the language and text and offers corresponding solutions; Chapter Five sums up the author’s experience from this translation task and her reflection of it during the report writing.
