This thesis mainly discusses the translation skills of long sentences in Richard Wright:From Black Boy to World Citizen under the guidance of text typology theory proposed by Katharina Reiss. The first part gives introduction to the theory of text typology and its implications to translation criteria.Based on the functions of language,Katharina Reiss classifies texts into three types:informative texts, expressive texts, and operative texts. She concludes the main characteristics of texts for each type and puts forward the criteria for translating texts of each type. The second part discusses the translation of long sentences in Richard Wright; From Black Boy to World Citizen,According to text typology theory, the author analyzes the characteristics of the source text and concludes that it is an informative text, the translation criteria of which should be fidelity and fluency.Guided by these translation criteria, the author has chosen four translation skills, including amplification, shift, division, and reconstructing to translate the long sentences in the source text. The last part gives conclusion that the text typology theory shows a guiding significance in helping translators to choose translation skills. And under the guidance of the theory, the four translation skills, namely amplification, shift, division, and reconstructing turn out to be effective in translating long sentences in this text.
