Chinese To English Translation Report On The Report On Informatization Progress Of Compulsory Education In Chengdu

With the rapid spread of network technology since the late 1990s, China has witnessed increasingly closer connection between social development and information technology, which has been extensively applied to education reform, internalization and modernization. The concept of "education informatization" gradually becomes the new focus of propelling education progress and attracts high attention of all local governments. Accordingly, the Chengdu Education Bureau has compiled and translated the Report on Informatization Progress of Compulsory Education in Chengdu to publicize and promote education informatization in Chengdu.This Chinese-to-English translation report carries out systematic and in-depth analysis of the translation practice of this progress report from perspectives of translation process, obstacles and strategies. The report records and describes the procedure of this translation task which includes pre-analysis of language style concerned with government document translation, confirmation and preparation of task assignment, technical terms and translation tools, as well as the employment of the ICAT translation software and final translation proofreading and other post-translation work. Besides, the author attempts to apply Eugene Nida’s "Functional Equivalence Theory", especially his argument on "function" and "readers’response", to the identification and interpretation of typical problems at lexical and syntactical level with research methods of comparison and exemplification. Problems at lexical level mainly refer to technical terms, expressions with Chinese characteristics and organization names. In view of syntactical level, features of verbalization, active voice and parataxis concerning the Chinese source text are identified. Faced with the above translation barriers, this report has correspondingly proposed translation strategies at lexical level, such as literal translation, free translation and explanatory translation, as well as translation techniques at syntactical level, such as adoption of nominalization, passive voice and hypotaxis methods.The report has analyzed and summarized translation process, obstacles and solutions with an aim to provide reference to other translation of similar type and government documents. Meanwhile, it is also expected that the choice of applying Eugene Nida’s "Functional Equivalence" to official document translation study can expand the horizon of political and economic translation and offer certain tips to translation practice and research.
