A Whispered Interpreting Report Guided By The Interpretive Theory ——A Case Study Of A Whispered Interpreting Task For A Weekly Meeting Of A Fitness Company

With China’s opening up,Shanghai has grown into an cosmopolis,Therefore,a large number of interpreters are needed to serve as the bridge between China and the outside world.Different industries and enterprises have different requirements for interpreters.As interpreters,we must think about how to provide better services and stand out from the competition.This report is based on the whispered interpreting of a weekly meeting of Flowcycle,a Shanghai-based fitness company.In the report,the author analyzes the whole process of interpretation from pre-task preparation,performance during the task,to post-task evaluation.The speech had a large number of repetition,incomplete sentences and illogical structures.The first half of the meeting was highly professional.And the second half featured highly frequent interaction.All of these have posed great challenges for the interpreting process.The Interpretive Theory of Translation founded by the Paris School is an important guideline for analyzing whispered interpreting.The Interpretive Theory summarizes the translatiop process into a triangular model,which believes that the translation process is more than just a direct transcoding from the source language to the target language.Instead,it is a process of extracting the core meaning of the speech,storing it in the interpreter’s mind in a non-verbal form,and then expressing it in the target language.Guided by the Interpretive Theory and previous research on whispered interpreting,the report summarizes the difficulties encountered in this interpreting practice into three aspects and analyzes the coping strategies,Through the report,the author has acquired in-depth understanding towards whispered interpreting and the Interpretive Theory,which will be of great use in her future practice.
