A Report On Liaison Interpreting For Holland LYNX Water Purification Company

In the era of multi-tiered, wide-ranging and all-dimensional international communication, interpreting has become indispensable in international communication in terms of politics, economy, culture and etc. This report is based on a liaison interpreting that the author has done for Holland LYNX Water Purification Company. It mainly discusses the difficulties in the process of interpreting and the coping strategies and techniques the author has taken to tackle the problems.The report consists of four chapters. Chapter one is the task description. Chapter two is the task process, including liaison interpreting, pre-interpreting preparation and interpreting process. Chapter three is the case analysis which is the key part. In this part,the author selects some typical examples for further analysis from three aspects:interpreter’s subjectivity consciousness, handling cultural differences, and handling difficulties in understanding the source language. Chapter four is the conclusion. It lists the summary of the practice and the enlightenment for the future study.Through the task description and the case analysis, the author gets the following conclusions.(1) Liaison interpreting is a communicative activity through language, in which the interpreter is also involved. To ensure the smooth proceeding of the interpreting, interpreters give full play to subjectivity consciousness including visibility consciousness and empowerment consciousness.(2) Due to different cultural traditions of the two sides, sometimes misunderstanding or even conflicts may arise. At that time interpreters should not just be a language code switcher but a bridge between two different cultures.(3) Liaison interpreting working site is unfixed and the audience is miscellaneous. Interpreters may encounter problems like speaker’s strong accent, fast speed of delivery or density of information, and unfamiliar technical terms. Therefore,to ensure the high interpreting quality, liaison interpreters should attach great importance to the listening and understanding of the source language and adopt multiple strategies such as transliteration, reasonable inferring based on the context, focusing onthe major ideas and turning to the speaker for clarification.
