A Practice Report On Liaison Interpreting For The 14^th Wuzhou Jewel Festival

Liaison Interpreting is becoming more and more popular with the growing of the international exchange in China,the occasions for liaison interpreting are even more frequently seen in daily life than official consecutive or simultaneous interpretations.The interpreting pedagogy and research in China now regularly give more focus on the quality of language output,while communicating tactics of liaison interpreting still stay as a virgin land.In author's view,except for the evaluation on the quality of language output,more light should be shed on interpreters themselves and their subjectivity in a bid to further enhance the overall interpreting quality.This report is based on the author's practice of liaison interpreting for a reception with Bengtsfors delegation of Sweden during the 14^th Wuzhou Jewel Festival.The Swedish delegation visited two colleges and the author served as an interpreter between the staff of schools and the Swedish delegation.The conversations contain gem-polishing and school culture,etc.Via analyzing specific cases,this report studies three roles played by a liaison interpreter,including discourse monitor,speaker's broker and conversation facilitator.The author discusses some language strategies like appropriate interference,summarizing and reorganizing,language efficiency,etc.The subjectivity performing strategies including meeting the expectation of audience and catching the key information of speakers are also emphasized through relevant cases.More importantly,the author elaborates how liaison interpreters should improve their performance through voice and intonation control to raise their professionalism,and how to conduct necessary communicating tactics to win trust.It is hoped that this report could provide references for interpreting teaching or research and offer theoretical or practical aid to those interpreters who might need.
