A Report On The Translation Of Department Of Defense Strategic Plan And Implementation Plan For Language Skills, Regional Expertise, And Cultural Capabilities

The material of this report is composed of two parts, including Department of Defense Strategic Plan for Language Skills, Regional Expertise, And Cultural Capabilities and Implementation plan for language skills,regional expertise,and cultural capabilities, released by United States Department of Defense. Through the translating process, the author of this thesis realizes that some distinct characteristics of military texts, which is precision in word using, being formal in expressions, and being concise in language forms, etc. All these can account for the reasons why the translator should have a certain degree of military knowledge to overcome the barriers during the practice.Before the practice, the author seriously has collected, referred to, and mastered the expression of military knowledge, especially the parallel texts of the original material. To achieve the precise translation, the author has got a good command of the related military terms, military events, abbreviation etc. Besides, the author follows the criteria of "faithfulness, expressiveness and appropriateness" to make the translation more smooth and appealing. It is vital for the author to maintain and manifest its distinct military characteristics, and weigh the choice of words over and over again to guarantee the translation is concise and smooth, with the flavor of military terms, which makes the translation attractive. The author intends to improve the translation ability, and learn more strategies of translation. Meanwhile, the author expects to bring in some advanced foreign military strategies and makes her little contribution to the military establishment.The translation report mainly consists of four parts: the first chapter is the description of the translation, including text selection, project purposes, project significance, and report frame; the second chapter involves theoretical guidance, parallel texts, text analysis, tools and difficult cases analysis; the third chapter is summary, composed of translation experience, disadvantages and further study. The last part is related to the appendix of the original text and the translated text.
