A Study On Goldblatt’s Translation Of Mo Yan’s Works From The Perspective Of Defamiliarizing Translation Theory

In 2012, exciting news came out from the Nobel Prize committee in Sweden that Mo Yan who is the Chinese writer has won the Nobel Prize in literature. After getting the prize, Mo Yan’s literature works have won the attention from many foreign readers. For presenting the Chinese literature works to the world, translation has become a necessary bridge.This thesis adopts the theory of Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak who is a theorist of post-colonial studies, focusing on the three central ideas of Spivak, namely translation with love, "to surrender" and defamiliarizing effect. The corpus is Howard Goldblatt’s five translation works of Mo Yan, which are Red Sorghum, Big Breasts & Wide Hips, The Republic of Wine, Shifu, You’ll Do Anything for a Laugh and Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out. The qualitative and quantitative methods are used to have a thorough study on Goldblatt’s translation.Some findings are concluded from the study:1) Goldblatt’s translation is with love and shows the Chinese culture.2) Goldblatt surrenders to Mo Yan’s works and farthest displays features of Mo Yan’s works and the writing purpose of Mo Yan.3) "Surrendering to" and translation with love in Goldblatt’s translation leads to the defamiliarizing effect that heterogenous culture can be spread and readers are able to acquire a new reading experience.Goldblatt’s translation well presents the features of Mo Yan’s works and the characteristics of Chinese culture, thus western readers have the chance to know a different culture and gain a new reading experience so that their pleasant sensations of reading are strengthened. That is to say, the defamiliarizing translation has positive meaning for the spread of Chinese culture and the equal culture communication in the current world. Therefore comes this study of Goldblatt’s translation on the basis of the defamiliarizing translation, with an aim to give references to the future translation rich in culture and boost the spread and communication of Chinese culture so as to gradually enhance the soft power of China.
