The subject of the translation report is from The Doctor Is In: Dr.Ruth on Love,Life and Joie de Vivre,which is the representative work of the famous American Jewish author and media personality Ruth Westheimer,better known as Dr.Ruth.The writer selects the Prologue,Chapter One and Chapter Two to complete the translation practice.This literary work is quite valuable because of its real contents,humorous and touching language and the enlightenment to the readers.Before translation,the writer reads and analyzes the source text carefully and then selects text type theory as the instructional theory for the translation practice.Text type theory tells the writer that the text analysis is the foundation of translation practice and different texts' translation should adopt different translation methods.Under the guidance of text type theory,the writer integrates the Peter Newmark's studies of text types and firmly believes that the translation text is expressive.On the basis of Peter Newmark's study of expressive text and his semantic translation and communicative translation,the writer completes the translation practice.The writer finds that this literary work,which is full of the author's deep feelings and special ideas,is rich in cultural and historical information and terminologies,figures of speech and the set phrases are also used in abundance.The writer also finds that semantic translation and communicative translation will be great helpful for improving the translation quality of this expressive text.The writer considers that text type theory is one great guidance for the literary translation.The report is mainly divided into four chapters.In the first chapter,the writer introduces the source of translation work,analyzes the original text briefly and illustrates the meaning of the translation practice.In the second chapter,the writer records the whole process from preparations before translation practice to the final draft,in addition,some problems and related solutions are also recorded.In the third chapter,the writer summarizes difficult points during the translation and ways to solve them under the guidance of text type theory and other translation methods.In the fourth chapter,the writer describes the experience and impression of the translation practice.The writer hopes that the translation practice can offer a reference for following similar translation.
