Report On The Translation Of The Novel Go Set A Watchman

With the rapid development of economy and society, China is making an ever-increasing cultural exchange with Western countries. More and more western literary works have been introduced into China and Chinese people have begun to be exposed to western culture. Therefore, the Chinese translation of western literary works plays an important role in the cultural exchange between China and the West.The translation practice report, based on the first four chapters of Go Set a Watchman,written by a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Harper Lee, conducts a preliminary study on the translation of long sentences in literary works with the guidance of relevance theory.The translation report is divided into five parts. The first part describes the translation task, including the brief introduction of the original text as well as the reasons for text selection. The second part presents the translation process, covering the translation preparation, the whole translation process, and revisions of the translation. The third part is the main body of the report, which focuses on the translation of long sentences in the text from the perspective of relevance theory. The author cites some examples to conclude and analyze the linguistic features of long sentences, including literariness, figures of speech and loose structure. Moreover, the author adopts the following translation methods such as amplification, sentence reconstruction and method of turning phrases into clauses under the guidance of relevance theory. In the fourth part, the author presents her accumulations of words andphrases and improvements in translation skills. The fifth part delivers a conclusion of the translation task.The report is aimed at conducting a study on the translation methods of long sentences in literary works. The author expects that it can be of practical value to resolve the similar difficulties in other literary works.
