The features of literature determine that literary translation is different from translations of other types of writing. Literature differs from other disciplines in its literariness. Literariness is an essential characteristic of any literary works with aesthetic effects and explains why poems are poems and why novels are novels. To translate English long sentences faithfully and smoothly, first we need to analyze the differences in sentence structure between English and Chinese. Language comparison is of great importance. Only by comparing two different languages and finding their respective characteristics can we know how to express the same meaning in Chinese or English correctly. This thesis is a case study of A Man of Parts by English author and literary critic David Lodge. This biographical novel features many long and complex sentences. The author introduces three techniques-linear method, order-reversing method and comprehensive method-to translate English long sentences into Chinese by analyzing the sentence structure differences between Chinese and English as well as conveying the style of the literary works. The author found that long sentences remain a consistent style in David Lodge’s works, so to translate works written by him, we should retain the long sentences in the target language as possible as we can. |
