Painting develops in history of human. In China, the primitive rock paintings, the neolithic pottery paintings, the cotton and silk paintings in pre-Qin, the scroll paintings in Wei-Jin period, and the modern paintings, they are all the representation of the art created by people.In modern times, Contents in paintings are no longer confined to traditions. Modern ideas and expression skills in other painting schools are expanded in modern paintings. For the development of modern China figure paintings, the traditional skills and modern elements should be included in the works of modern artists. The core of paintings is the culture of people. The main presentation of China figure painting is the culture of Chinese people. The new concepts and traditional used expression skills should be mixed reasonably in the figure paintings. The connotation and emotion of artists should be expressed properly for the development of modern China figure paintings.The expression skills of China figure paintings are discussed in this paper. The brush and ink is not only the painting tools, but also the foundation of development and innovation of China figure paintings. The expression skills of brush and ink in traditional China figure paintings are summarized in this paper. The essence of China figure paintings is the expression of authors’ understanding on Chinese traditional culture. The main feature of China figure paintings is the brief line and ink in the painting and the charm expressed by these skills.Paintings in different period express the culture and authors’ preferences. All these features are expressed by brush and ink in China figure paintings. The inheriting and innovation of modern China figure paintings and the expansion of western paintings schools are discussed in this paper. The future of modern China figure paintings is summarized finally. The author believes that the expression skills should be diversification in the future.Besides the theoretical discussion, I attempt to express the understanding of Chinese culture in my own art works.
