The Study On Shen Quan’s Calligraphy

The development tendency of Chinese calligraphy in Qing dynasty was that the model calligraphy study gradually declined and at the same time the stele calligraphy study grown up rapidly. But at the beginning of Qing dynasty, the model study still played an important role. Such as Dong Qichang, owing to the political and cultural choice or the influence of Shen Quan even the driving force of the Emperor and so on, whose calligraphy style was well known all over the early Qing dynasty. Shen Quan, whose calligraphy was well known all over the world, has an extremely high identity as the calligraphy teacher of Emperor Kang Xi. Emperor Kang Xi initially learnt from the calligraphers in Tang and Song dynasty, but he turned to study Dong Qichang because of the influence of Shen Quan. Then the thought of the Emperor led to the development of Chinese calligraphy in the early Qing dynasty, while many calligraphers began to learn from him. Shen Quan played an important role in the inheritance of Dong Qichang’s calligraphy style.So this paper will take Shen Quan as the breakthrough point, and then concentrate on the historical reasons of popularity of Dong Qichang’s calligraphy style and his role in this process.The introduction part concludes research status, focus and innovation, methods and significance.The first part, I will firstly study the extraction of Shen Quan, the calligraphy achievements, his poems and friends and so on.The second part, I will further study his calligraphy style, which includes his teachers and the process of studying calligraphy.The third part, I will study the relationship between Shen Quan and the historical reasons of popularity of Dong Qichang’s calligraphy style and confirm his status in the calligraphy field in Qing dynasty through the art activities between Emperor and Shen Quan and his leading to the calligraphy group in Nanshufang.
