| Novel, as a tool to cheer one’s heart, not only can spread the culture, but also takes the responsibility to educate the readers. In 2011, Pig Boy written by J.C. Burke in Australia was published, whose complicated plots attract millions of readers. The novel tells the tragic experiences of a teenager who is expelled out of the school.This is a project report of excerpts of Pig Boy. In this report, the introduction and analysis of the source text, the done work to complete the translation of the novel, the analysis of the translation theory and techniques to deal with the difficulties in the translation and the conclusion are included. During the translation of this novel, the methods of lexical substitution, the specification of the referential meaning, sentence transformation and transliteration are taken use of to solve the translation problems in terms of words, sentences and linguistic features of the characters under the direction of the theory of communicative translation and semantic translation of Peter Newmark. Novels are deeply rooted in culture. Thus a good translation can only be completed when the translators have a good knowledge of different cultures and languages. Meanwhile, the translators are supposed to acquire the background of the characters and comprehend the novel before translating. When translating, the overall style of the novel should be grasped; the personality of the characters is ought to be fully understood, and different dialects should be adopted flexibly to fully present the personality of every character.
