Study On The Oil Painting Art Of Guan Zilan

Guan Zilan is one of the fist Chinese female painters who studied in Japan, enjoying equal popularity with Pan Yuliang, Fang Junbi and Cai Weilian, and she is the first-rate female oil painter in the period of the Republic of China, who is known aboard as a "female painter with the temperament of Chinese Guixiu". For various reasons, however, Guan Zilan et al were out of the public eye for a long time, until recent years these names which were forgotten by history has started to appear in public view. This paper bases on the oil paintings of Guan Zilan and takes the literature of the Republic of China as principle theory basis to deeply research into the characteristics of Guan Zilan’s oil paintings combining with Photography, Stylistics, Documentary Research Method and quantitative and qualitative methods and so on.This paper attempts to research into the characteristics of Guan Zilan’s oil paintings mainly through the following parts:the first part mainly focuses on the historical background analysis of the style of Guan Zilan’s oil paintings. Firstly, this part goes into understanding western art’s influence on that of Japan during late Qing and early Republic period through reviewing the transmission of west painting to the east to know how Japanese oil painting influenced Chinese modern painting by returned students. Secondly, this part goes into analyzing Guan Zilan’s life and her circle of friends especially the influence of her three important teachers----Chen Baoyi, Hong Ye and Ding Yanyong; the second and third parts are main bodies of this paper, which focus on the features of two styles (fauvism and neorealism) to analyze the characteristics of Guan Zilan’s oil paintings concretely from the perspective of line, color and composition combing with concrete paintings. The fourth part mainly discusses the historical significance and realistic value of Guan Zilan’s oil paintings.In this paper, the innovation is that it not only bases on history but also applies graphic combination to restore history’s judgment on Guan Zilan, which has a great historical significance to the construction of the history of modern China arts and Chinese oil painting.
