Guan Zilan(1903-1985)was one of the most representative artists of female artists in the early 20th century.She was renowned in painting field both in China and Japan.After decades of fading out of the painting field,the studies on Guan Zilan and her paintings become gradually popular with more focus of people on studying'Republic of China'.However,there are still limitations and defects in the studies of her painting art.They mostly focus on her life,artistic view and painting style.This paper aims to research the time background,the image of works,relevant documents of Guan Zilan to objectively analyze the accomplishment and value of her figure painting art and finally determine Guan ZiLan as a member of the 'New Women'artists in the Republic of China and her position in modern Chinese history of fine arts.This paper,based on the figure painting of Guan Zilan which were finished in 1924 to 1941,analyze the technique features of painting line,brush strokes,and color and focus more attention on portraits,and body-painting which account for the most,from the perspective of the subject and ontology of painting.The paper is divided into four parts:the first chapter mainly analyzes the process of the formation of the painting style of Guan Zilan.First,analyze the trend of studying abroad encouraged by the idea of saving country by art and the shock to Japanese painting field brought by western art to understand the background of the art form of Guan Zilan painting.Second,analyze the three tutors of Guan Ye,Chen Baoyi and Ding Yanyong,who helped the enlightenment,formation and promotion of artistic style in her painting.In the second chapter,analyze the reasons for the style formation of Guan Zilan's figure painting from the three subjects:portrait painting,self-portrait,body-painting and multi-figures works.The third chapter mainly analyzes her artistic features,and her efforts and exploration on the integration of China and the west from the development and changes of her lines,strokes and colors.The fourth chapter is for determining historical position,historical significance and historical value of Guan Zilan,and in the meantime,put her in the study of women artists in the Republic of China,so as to conduct accurate positioning of Guan Zilan in the art of painting.
