| The categorical proposition is widely used in ordinary language, and it is deeply studied in logic. What is the relationship between the subject and the predicate which is connected by the copula being in categorical proposition? Chen Bo put forward eight kinds of theories which are entity and attribute theory, individual and general theory, extension theory, connotation theory, expand theory, similarity theory, pragmatic theory and identity theory, but they still need to be combed and studied. This article mainly expounds the individual and general theory and the identity theory. The first chapter is the introduction, which sketchs out the eight kinds of theories interpreting the relationship between subject and predicate. And it’s very important for analyzing propositions to realize the relationship between subject and predicate clearly. In the second chapter, the historical development especially in the ancient Greece of the thought of general and individual theory is teased out, and Hegel’s views on the thought of individual and general are discussed. Some understandings about his views are put forward. Then the article puts forward new thinking about the individual and general theory. The third chapter describes the identity theory. The relationship between identity and substitution of co-referential and nominatum is analyzed clearly, especially how Frege and Russell’s theory of nominatums solve the conundrum about substitution of co-referential. Then the article explains what the identity theory is and how to interpret the relationship between subject and predicate. The fourth chapter reviews and compares the advantage and shortage of the individual and general theory and the identity theory. Finally the article draws the conclusion that the identity theory is better in interpreting the relationship between subject and predicate than the individual and general theory, for without the identity theory, modern logic would never come into being only by the individual and general theory. |
