Report On John Dewey And Environmental Philosophy:Philosophical Terminology Translation Under The Translation Principles Of Faithfulness-Expressiveness-Elegance

Globalization nowadays not only accelerates the communication between different countries in economy and culture, but also allows for an open exchange of ideas with people from different countries. Under such circumstances, more and more western philosophical translated works flow into China. At the same time, however, many problems come to the surface in the process, among which a critical one is the disordered translation of philosophical terms. Philosophical terminology translation in China remains to be non-standardized in the academic community, resulting in an increasing number of problematic works entering China. The plan of this report was born of the conviction that the problems of philosophical terminology translation should be resolved soon.The report is based on the translation of the "Preface" and "Epilogue" of John Dewey and Environmental Philosophy. In addition to the reflections gained in the initial attempt to translate philosophical works, the justification of the application of faithfulness-expressiveness-elegance translation principles put forward by Yan Fu to philosophical terminology translation is also carefully examined.The report consists of five chapters. In chapter one, the background and significance of writing the report will be introduced. Chapter two mainly gives a brief introduction to the source text, namely, John Dewey and environmental ethics. In chapter three, the translation process is subdivided into three stages, pre-translation, during-translation and post-translation. Each stage will be given detailed descriptions. Besides, reflections on translating philosophical works will also be presented in this part. In chapter four, the philosophical terms singled out from the source material fall into four categories, to be precise, personal names and book titles, philosophical world view and methodology, common words with philosophical implications and non-corresponding philosophical terms. Concrete examples are used here to illustrate the effectiveness and viability of faithfulness-expressiveness-elegance in philosophical terminology translation. The final chapter examines the limitations and deficiencies of this report.It is anticipated that the report could offer some insight into philosophical terminology translation and that the disordered translation of philosophical works in the academic circle could be eradicated one day.
