The development of Chinese zither in Shanghai area has its particularity which can’t be ignored in modern times. The development and change of Chinese zither have a prominent performance when the zither-a traditional Chinese musical instrument through thousands years combines with Shanghai, the first international city in China. Zhejiang zither brings a new period of development for Shanghai’s zither music culture, which originated in Hangzhou and flourished in Shanghai. Wang Xunzhi and Xu Zhengao successfully produced the s-type zither with 21 strings in early PRC, the "Zhan tai feng" swept the country during the Cultural Revolution and He Baoquan created a butterfly zither in Shanghai all have shown that zither music appears different characteristics in musical styles, techniques and functions under the combined effects of a variety of social and cultural issues such as short and macro-social change, collision of Chinese and Western musical culture and conflict between tradition and modernity.This paper which consists of an introduction, three chapters and conclusion, studied Shanghai zither music in three modern times and tried to explore the main music features embodied by Shanghai zither music through analysis of zither representative works, investigation of related musical works, narrative of music matters, summary of characteristics of music and theoretical discussion of zither players’ identity transformation from folk to school, instrument reform and flourishing reason of "Zhan tai feng". The author believed that the main roles and manifestations closely linked with culture field and speech of the times and social and political factors brought zither music a strong political overtones during the music features changes of Shanghai zither. On the other hand, the collision between Chinese culture and Western culture had a major impact on zither’s creative themes, music style and form. These opportunities and crises brought by external social factors increased prominently and this is why we need to think about how to handle the relationship between tradition and innovation.
