As the world economy goes forward, global exchanges are increasingly frequent and translation for science and technology has come into being and played an important role in international exchanges of science and technology. The Skopostheorie is the representative theory of Germany Functionalist School and exerts great influences on both translation theory and translation practice. This report, with petroleum processing text as a case study, takes the Skopostheorie as its guidance. It aims at summarizing the translation methods of the scientific text in terms of word, sentence and discourse, so as to improve the quality of the Target Text.As regards semantic features, the petroleum processing text is rich in specialized vocabulary and nominal construction. The corresponding translation should pay attention to fidelity and coherence, so the translation process should be guided by Fidelity Rule and Coherence Rule. With regard to syntactic features, there are a lot of passive sentences, non-finite clauses and long and difficult sentences in the Source Text. The corresponding Target Text should be accurate enough to realize the goal of spreading information, so it should operate under the guidance of Skopos Rule, Coherence Rule and Fidelity Rule. When it comes to discourse features, the Source Text achieves coherence through means of reiteration and logical connective. Meanwhile, it is explicitly logical in description and coherent throughout the whole text. Therefore, the corresponding translation should be guided by Fidelity Rule and Coherence Rule. Henceforth, it is obvious that the Skopostheorie is feasible in guiding the E-C translation of the petroleum processing text. This report consists of five parts. The first part mainly talks about the research background, the literature review about translation for science and technology at home and abroad, the brief introduction of translation task and the research significance. The second part focuses on the process of the study, which includes preparation before translation, process of translation and proofreading after translation. Preparation before translation is introduced in aspects of the selection of translation text and the characteristics of scientific text. The characteristics are analyzed at semantic, syntactic and discourse levels. The third part gives a brief introduction of the Skopostheorie, the theoretical basis of the report. It first concludes the development of the theory, then illustrates the three main rules of the theory and the relations among them, finally analyzes the guiding significance the three rules have to the E-C translation of the petroleum processing text. The fourth part is about the translation of petroleum text and the accomplishment of this report. During the translation, the writer analyzes specific translation methods from perspectives of word, sentence, and discourse under the guidance of the Skopostheorie. The fifth part focuses on the conclusion of translation methods. In a word, the translation of specialized vocabulary and nominal constructions is guided by Fidelity Rule and Coherence Rule, and the translation of specialized vocabulary can be done with the help of dictionaries and the translation of nominal constructions should use conversion. The translation of passive sentences should follow Skopos Rule and Coherence Rule, and passive sentences are transformed into active sentences, passive sentences, judgement sentences, and sentences with no subjects. Non-finite clauses can be translated into linkage sentences, proposed sentences with no subjects and outside-part structures under the guidance of Coherence Rule. Translation of long and difficult sentences is guided by Coherence Rule, with translation methods of reverse translation, sequential translation, and other methods used together. Translation of discourse should be guided by Coherence Rule and Fideilty Rule, ensuring that the target text conform to the source text in coherence and logic. Apart from these, the writer also summarizes the achievements and problems in the process of translation practice.
