A Translation Report On The Listening And Translation Of Videos On Petroleum Technologies

With the advancement of the internationalization process, the integration of world petroleum market marches ahead irreversibly. The Chinese oil market is closely linked with the global market and any changes and fluctuations in the world market would definitely trigger correspondences domestically. Be it in the exploitation, exploration, transportation or international trading, our oil industry shares the same breath with the world oil picture. Therefore, good mastery of petroleum technical English and knowledge of exploitation, development and sales from the English perspective is of great practical significance. Based on major characteristics, the author chose the project of listening and translating the latest overseas unsubtitled videos on petroleum technology. And a report was also made on this listening and translating projet.This thesis consists of two parts. The first part is the report on the listening and translation project. It includes five chapters:introduction of the source text, language characteristics and Skopostheorie, description of the translation process, translation techniques and conclusion. Chapter one deals with the background of this listening and translating project, introduction of the source text and the significance of this project; Chapter two covers the language characteristics of petroleum technical English, Skopostheorie, application of Skopostheorie in petroleum technical English translation; Chapter three elaborates on the description of the translation process, such as the preparation before translation, difficulties encountered in listening and translation with the corresponding solutions and summary of the translation process. Chapter four expounds translation techniques and Chapter five is the conclusion about this project, including the experience acquired, the unresolved issues of translation and implication. The second part is the listening and translation practice, covering the petroleum origins and accumulations, the formation of a deposit, drilling mud, drilling pump and the hoisting system, which are the main components of the oil and gas exploitation and exploration.This listening and translating process granted the author profound knowledge about petroleum engineering and geology, the Skopostheorie as well as the application of several listening and translation techniques. Hopefully this thesis can serve as the reference for those who are committed to petroleum technical translation.
