A Practice Report On The Translation Of Champagne For One

The detective novel is a type of popular genre originating in European countries, and this kind of novel focuses on the description of the event and the process of cracking criminal cases. What attracts the readers most is the complicated and alluring plots.Rex Stout is an American writer noted for his detective novel. In China, there are only eight Chinese versions of his novels, so his other excellent novels have not been translated. Champagne for One is one of them. It is selected from Nero Wolfe series written by Rex. Champagne for One is a story about a young woman who is poisoned during the dinner party held annually, and the main characters Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin who figure out the case and reveal the truth.This practice report has five parts. The first part is an introduction of the background and significance of this research. The second part is a description of the novel. The third part analyses the source text, and introduces the guiding theory-text typology under which this practice is carried out. In the fourth part which is the main body of the report, the author mainly discusses the communicative translation used in this practice at both lexical level and syntactical level. There are four aspects in the analysis at lexical level, such as translation of title, names, proper nouns and phrases. The analysis at syntactical level contains the translation of dialogues and descriptive sentences, which can reflect the characters’personality and social background. Aimed to achieve the best communicative effect, the translation should abide by the word-order of Chinese and accurately convey the meaning of the source text. The last chapter of this report is a conclusion of the translation practice.It is hoped that this study could provide some insights for other translators so as to produce more excellent translations of Rex Stout’s other novels in the future.
