The Representation And Translation Of The Great Harmony Culture In Chinese Kungfu Films

The Kungfu film is one of the best ways to spread Chinese culture. As a sort of special cultural product, Kungfu films not only disseminate cultural symbols, but also cultural values and theories. Since the 20th century, the popularity of Bruce Lee’s films has kept increasing, forming a kind of special cultural value. Studies on the cultural translation of Bruce Lee’s films have focused on two aspects:studies on Bruce Lee as a film star, and studies on the translation of the national image, the nationalism, the traditional culture in his films. Based on these studies, there are still some work to do with the translation of the Great Harmony culture in Chinese Kungfu films and in Bruce Lee’s films.Translation is a transcoding in language, and it is a spreading of culture as well. Taking Bruce Lee’s series of films as an example, following the research questions how the Great Harmony culture is represented and translated in Chinese Kungfu films, this paper discusses the representation and translation of the Great Harmony culture. Based on the literature review, it can be concluded that the research on the Great Harmony culture is a new perspective. From the case study, it can be concluded that, the representation in Chinese Kungfu films is between man and nature, man and society, and between one’s body and mind. In Bruce Lee’s films, it is presented in the Great Harmony of martial arts, Chinese traditional culture, the whole society and that of the whole world. The comparative study was mainly used in the translation as demonstrated in the translation of film titles, Kungfu terms, and idioms. An appropriate translation method will help the spread of the Great Harmony culture. Rewriting is mainly used for the translation of the film titles, literal translation and free translation make people know the Kungfu terms for their first sight; and intralingual translation and interlingual translation will take into account the similarities and differences in different culture, and realize the Great Harmony in culture.This paper consists of five parts. The first part demonstrates the background and significance of the research. After literature review, the second part raises some questions of the research, and analyzes the method of research used in this paper. The third and forth section are the key to this paper. The third section is the representation of the Great Harmony culture in Kungfu films. The forth part discussed the translation of the Great Harmony culture.
