Studies On The Design Ideology Of George Nelson

George Nelson(1907- 1986), regarded as one of most influential figures in America, is an architect, a furniture designer and a product designer, who has reached great achievement in the research of architectural theory and furnishings. He is the earliest architect who pays attention to the study of ecology building. At the same time, as a well-known design critic, the thought influence of Nelson’s design is very significant, and also full of excellent foresight. This paper takes Nielsen as a case,focuses on the carding and research of his design practices and thoughts.The article is divided into the following four parts.The first part mainly elaborates the historical background of George Nelson’s life and social development,through combining literature, summarizes the design overview during World War II and American post-war. It mainly analyzes from the following four aspects: the social economic environment of Nelson lived(including before World war II, during the war and postwar), European designers’ exploration and practice in the United States,America’s new developments under the new technology condition, and postwar America’s design art education, so as to attempt to explore the influence of the historical background to George Nelson’s design and ideas.The second part is to explore Nelson design thought origin. In chronological order as a clue, it explains George Nelson’s life background, and then introduces modernist design masters who play an important role in the process of forming George Nelson design. At last, it generalizes and summarizes Nelson’s design concept.The third part combines the design practice of Nelson to explore, and combs the following four aspects: furniture design, graphic design(visual communication design), architectural planning design, exhibition design, selects the typical cases to describe design works in all areas.The fourth part analyzes from the impact on the United States local modern design and the significance of Nielsen design ideas to modern design, combining with Herman Miller company, Nelson design firm, and Probst, Yi Duoer and Tesa Si and other designers, to analyze the importance of Nelson’s thought. Ultimately, there isthe thinking about the current study design initiated from the study of George Nelson case.George Nelson excellent design covers furniture, architecture, video and graphic design, especially in the field of furniture and architectural design, he received remarkable achievements. He is the precursor of pop style, a communicator of function and emotion, as well as an advocate of green design. From a functional point of view, on the basis of technology, materials and craftwork, and at the same time,from the aesthetic perspective, on the basis of form, visual and senses.He has proved with practice that how the modern product design to provide service for people’s daily,to improve the life quality of people, to enrich diversity of people’s lives, and his design practice greatly enriched the modern design theory. Because he has the most representative and voice in American modernist masters.
