A Report On Interpreting For Shandong-South Australia Development And Cooperation Forum

This report is based on the author’s interpreting experience of the Shandong-South Australia Development and Cooperation Forum in two consecutive years,2014 and 2015. In this report, the author first gives a description of the project and various kinds of interpreting work she did. Then, she summarizes the difficulties she faced in interpreting, including verbal and non-verbal obstacles. In order to find the desirable solution to these difficulties, she introduces the Interpretive Theory, especially the Deverbalization Hypothesis. Viewing it as a guiding principle, the author then analyzes many challenging examples from the project. After this, she reflects on the project and drawing on the experience and lessons of her work, she gives her own suggestions on the qualities of an interpreter. Meanwhile, she lists out feedback she got from different aspects, from peer interpreters to experts. In the end, she reaches a conclusion, emphasizing that with the help of deverbalization, the output language can be both accurate and smooth.The author stresses that the Interpretive Theory is effective as a guiding principle in interpreting. However, it cannot work alone. Abundant background knowledge and cognitive knowledge cannot be missed. In this sense, a qualified interpreter must develop in an all-round way.
