With the deepening of globalization, contacts among countries are becoming more and more frequent,in which interpreters are highly needed.More attention has been paid to the quality of interpreting.Universities have opened interpreting courses to train more potential interpreters. However, there are some problems for student interpreting learners. What is translation-major students’ performance in diplomatic interpreting? What problems and difficulties would they encounter? What strategies could be adopted to improve students’ performance? These are the three questions in this thesis. The thesis adopts the methods of data analysis and case study.25 translation-major students’ class interpreting is recorded and transcribed.Guided by the Interpretive Theory, especially Deverbalization Theory, students’ performance is analyzed.Through the study, the author has found that some students have done a relatively good job at the lexical level such as culture-loaded terms,Chinese four-character idioms, proverbs and idioms etc. Most students could break the language shackle and express the essence of the speaker. However, students on the whole are fairly weak at the syntactic level such as the handling of parallel structures and serial verb structures. They,to a large extent, are still used to conforming to the language forms which makes the target language sound loosen and illogical. To deal with these difficulties, this thesis provides the following specific strategies for the students as reference to cope with the difficulties and improve their diplomatic interpreting ability in the future: explanatory interpreting, addition of subjects, attachment of logical conjunctions, adoption of negative structure, conversion and omission of verbs, etc. |
