As deverbalization is a fleeting and elusive mental activity, researchers resort to indirect methods to indicate or quantify such a phenomenon either reflected in comprehension or reformulation phase.Nevertheless, the relation between comprehension and reformulation reflected by deverbalization phenomena has not been investigated. On the other hand,as a prominent feature of consecutive interpreting, notes have seldom been utilized in empirical studies as a device to analyze the cognitive process of deverbalization in interpreter's minds, nor has note-reading been separated from the noting activity. This research intends to explore:(1)the comprehension mode of student interpreters whose bilingual and extra-linguistic knowledge might be insufficient to realize the ideal condition, specifically, whether the source text is comprehended on a meaning-basis and further, whether the meaning is grasped immediately;(2)the impact of comprehension mode on deverbalization reflected in reformulation(DiR)of student interpreters;(3)the impact of note-reading on DiR of student interpreters.16 Chinese interpreting students were invited to participate in an English to Chinese CI experiment. It is concluded that sense was partially absorbed but the action was indeed featured by instantaneity.Meanwhile, there's no distinctive connection between meaning-based comprehension or note-free delivery with DiR.Results echoing the three intentions shall shed light on the teaching and training of consecutive interpreting if the trainers' instructions on source text comprehension and note-taking are confirmed. The first two aims may contribute to the relation between deverbalization reflected in comprehension and reformulation.
