Public speaking is a verbal communication activity, through which the speaker tries to inform, persuade, and/or entertain. In many international settings, public speaking is an effective and popular way of communication. The interpretation of public speeches of this kind is both important and necessary, because, in many cases, interpretation is the medium between the speaker and the audience. A speech is usually written into a script in advance, in a formal style, with many parallel constructions and long sentences, where concepts unfamiliar to the interpreter may arise when specific problems are discussed, making it a challenging job for the interpreter. Based on the interpretation of the speech by Hillary Rodham Clinton at Asia Society in New York, the thesis discusses the interpretation strategies from the perspective of functionalism in order to find some general laws and review some tendencies in E-C consecutive interpreting, and, at the same time, to make them better serve future research and practice in this regard. This thesis consists of four parts, namely task description, task implement, case analysis and conclusion, which analyses the application of interpreting strategies during the interpreting from the functionalist perspective.
