College students are the backbone of the future society, more and more students have been delayed in academic tasks. Self-control plays an important role in the academic procrastination. It is significant to study the relationship between college students’ academic procrastination and self-control.According to Baumeister’s self-control energy model, self-control can be divided into trait self-control and state self-control, this study examines the relationship between the two dimensions and students’ academic procrastination.Study 1 aims to survey the college students’ academic procrastination. Results told us that college students got high academic procrastination scores, academic procrastination is serious. College students’ academic procrastination did not have gender and discipline differences, but students in different grades are significantly different in academic procrastination. Graduate students have fewer academic procrastination than undergraduate students.Study 2 uses 227 students as subjects. Trait self-control is measured by scale.According to the score of the self-control scale, college students will be divided into two groups. One group is the students of high quality self-control(n=61) and the other is low quality self-control group(n=61). Then to compare two groups of college students in academic procrastination scale. Results showed that high quality self-control individuals have lower academic procrastination, and low trait self-control individuals have high academic procrastination. Trait self-control affects academic procrastination.Study 3 uses 88 college students as subjects. State self-control is measured by self-depletion. According to the scores of state self-control(Stroop task), subjects are divided into high state self-control group and low state self-control group, then to compare two groups in academic procrastination scale. Results showed that high state self-control individuals scored lower than low state self-control individuals in the academic procrastination scale. State self-control will affect the academic procrastination.In conclusion, this study found that:(1)Academic procrastination of college students is serious.(2) Students ’ self-control ability has an impact on academic procrastination.(3) Trait self-control and state self-control is two independent dimensions of self-control.
