C-E Consecutive Interpreting Strategies From The Perspective Of Optimal Relevance

With the deepening of globalization and the development of the Internet,electronic commerce has become an emerging drive of the global economy. Alibaba, a tycoon of Chinese e-commerce, has spread its influence over the world and advanced deeper cultural exchanges between the East and the West. Therefore, interpreting plays a more and more important role during this process.Based on an episode from a talk show where Jack Ma shared his experience with the youth, the report explores the right consecutive interpreting strategies from the perspective of Optimal Relevance. Sperber and Wilson point out that verbal communication should follow the Ostensive-Inferential Model and its final goal is to seek optimal relevance. Hence, in order to establish optimal relevance, the model is also supposed to be followed. The “Ostensive Model” means the interpreter needs to intercept the stimuli from the speaker. The “Inferential Model” means the interpreter ought to consider relative contexts and seek optimal relevance so as to deliver the speaker’s intention to the audience in an efficient way. If stimuli are highly relevant in both Western and Eastern culture, literal translation is suggested. Otherwise,simplification and explication are wise strategies. The author aims to provide useful inspirations and experience for this field.
