A Simulated Consecutive Interpreting Practice Report Of 2020 Touching China From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

The report is a simulated consecutive interpreting report.The interpreter chooses Touching China,a CCTV show as the material,and the interpreting process lasted for2 hours and 30 minutes.Touching China is a program of character selection and it selects outstanding representatives with shocking spiritual power to give people spiritual touch and moral development.This program is of great importance for promoting the formation of a good social atmosphere.Aiming at the differences between Chinese and English in language and culture,the report discusses some inevitable problems in the interpreting process: some cultural-loaded words,Chinese four-character idioms and some rhetoric used by the speakers in their speeches cannot be well understood by foreign listeners,and the speakers’ words are prolix or more omitted may lead ambiguity to them.In order to solve these problems effectively,the interpreter compared various theories,and finally she used Relevance Theory as the guidance.Relevance Theory believes that consecutive interpreting process can be regarded as a two-round ostensive-inferential communication process which involves three parties: speaker,interpreter,and listener,and main task of the interpreter is to use inference mechanisms and some interpreting strategies to realize optimal relevance in this communication,that is to say,enabling the listeners to receive maximal contextual effects with minimal processing effort as possible as he can,thereby the success of the communication is guaranteed.Under the guidance of Relevance Theory,the interpreter summarizes four interpreting strategies,and they are addition,omission,substitution and free interpretation.The report is significant for the interpreter.On the one hand,she broadens her knowledge base and improve the ability of using the interpreting strategies flexibly.On the other hand,the interpreter hopes that this report could provide valuable references for the relevant interpretation studies in the future.
