Usability Of Public User Interface Design

Under the background of digital information society, the rapid development of information technology brings large convenience to people’s life, the concept of the product developed beyond the entity becoming more and more informatization. Nowadays, more and more human activities need to use information products to be realized. A transition process is taking place from a community which bases on service to a self-service community, reducing the cost of products and services, saving time for users, promoting the resources saving of the entire society.As information and communication technology constantly integrated into people’s daily life in all aspects, a wide variety of public terminal equipment began to appear in our public places. Those public terminal usually access to the vast number of user groups and offer a wide range of self-services. Its rapid development soon covered all areas of our life, such as banking and finance, health care, transportation and other fields. In spite of this, there are still many people can’t access to these services,utilization of those public terminals is still at low level. The user interface is an important part of public terminals, the usability of its design will directly affect the user’s use and experience. The study takes the issue of public terminal interface as the starting point, through researching found that public terminal interface differs from the traditional personal terminal interface, such as cell phones or computers, no matter in the user level, context level, interface content level, or operation level, public user interface has its own features. Studying the mechanism between the various interface features facilitate researchers and designers to better understand public terminal interface. Also due to the differences of user interface, the personal terminal interface design principles and methods cannot apply well to the public terminal interface. Therefore, the study try to work out public terminal interface usability principles and assessment indicators, as well as interface usability evaluation form. Then try to work out the design strategy towards public terminal interface, which will provide designers guidelines to design a better public terminal user interface, improving the efficiency of public terminal and user experience, to make these devices better service for people living.
