| Quotation is one of the common phenomenon in human verbal communication. In written language, quotation refers to the sentences or paragraphs that the author quotes from other books or articles to express their pragmatic intention, to clarify their thoughts and to strengthen the effect of language. In academic monographs and articles, quotations indeed play an important role in helping authors to express their views and ideas. However, quotations are simultaneously constrained by two contexts0one is from original text and the other is from the source text itself. Therefore, translation of quotations is an extremely challenging task. In the process of translating the academic monograph, Self, Other, and the world:On Dualism in Joseph Conrad’s Jungle Fiction, the author of the report discovers that the source text has a lot of quotations and the sources of these quotations are extensive, involving literature, politics, philosophy, religion, theology and other fields. Whether these quotations are translated correcting or not would directly affect readers understanding of the target text. In this translation practice report, the author first of all carefully analyzes characteristics of the quotations in the source text:then makes a deep analysis and discussion on translating quotations with some cases; and finally explores methods for translating quotations from pragmatic perspective. These translation methods include literal translation, free translation, addition and omission, adjustment of word order and internet-aided translation, etc. Due to dual context of quotations, namely the context of quotations in the original text and the context of quotations in the source text itself, the author pays special attention to contextual and pragmatic equivalence during translation. By focusing on the contextual meaning of quotations, the author flexibly uses translation techniques so as to faithfully reproduce the pragmatic effect in the target text. |
