At the beginning of 2019,a domestic film The Wandering Earth once again drew people's attention to the development of Chinese Science Fiction.Chinese science fiction first became known by the world in 2015,when the first volume of The Three-body Problem and The Folding Beijing translated by Ken Liu won the most coveted Science Fiction Achievement Award.Ken Liu has made tremendous contribution in introducing Chinese Science Fiction to the world. He is noted for his flowing, concise and reader-friendly translation. Therefore, his translation style and strategies are worth studying. In 1981,Peter Newmark developed the Communicative Translation Theory in his book Approaches to Translation.According to the theory,a translator should try to enable the target text reader to understand the text as the source text reader does. The author of this thesis will take The Folding Beijing as an example, focus on the culture-loaded word translation in the book to study Ken Liu's translation style and strategies.Ken Liu tends to keep the Chinese features of the source text in flowing and concise English. He adapts his translation to facilitate reading by means of domestication and explanation.Under certain circumstances,he even rewrites a sentence or two to help readers understand. With regards to rhetorical language,Ken generally simplifies the language by conveying the essential meaning of the language.
